British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
